Kayak
Turning (sweep)
Standard turn for calm waters.
Overview
A wide sweep on one side turns the kayak reliably on calm water. You guide the blade from the bow line to behind the hip — the longer the arc, the stronger the turn. For getting started, the sweep without edging is completely sufficient.
Step by step
Preparation
Turn head and shoulders towards the turn side and check clear space. Paddle on the side where you will pull the sweep. Upper body slightly turned towards the turn, feet firm on the footrest.
Sweep pull
Place the blade far forward on the kayak and pull a maximum wide arc behind the hip. Keep the blade flat and long in the water. Torso follows the movement — the boat turns smoothly without wobbling.
Light edge (optional)
Advanced paddlers can edge the kayak slightly towards the turn side — this strengthens the turn. Beginners can skip this: a pure sweep is enough on a calm lake for 90° and more.
Common mistakes
Short sweep
Common mistake
You pull only a short arc at the side — the kayak barely turns or drifts sideways.
Better
Full arc from the bow line to behind the hip. Keep the blade in the water longer, do not lift early.
Safety
Do not turn under bridges, docks or in dense traffic. Glance over your shoulder towards the turn side. In wind or waves, work more slowly — sudden edging is not necessary for beginners.

Practise in open water
Practise turning away from swimming areas and tight traffic. Light wind from behind can make learning easier — but only with safe distance from shore.
