Getting up & balance

From kneeling to a stable stand — the foundation for every SUP outing.

Overview

Before you can paddle efficiently, you need a stable stance. With a calm sequence and a wide base, getting up works even on slightly choppy water.

Step by step

  1. Kneeling position

Kneel in the centre of the board, shoulder-width apart. Paddle across the board in front of you. Distribute your weight evenly.

  2. One foot forward

Place one foot where your knee was. Hands wide on the board, eyes forward. Move slowly — no sudden jerks.

  3. Stand up

Bring the second foot up, feet hip-width apart and parallel. Keep your knees soft. Paddle blade in the water stabilises the board.

  4. Hold your balance

Hips stable, shoulders relaxed. Small movements in your knees and hips compensate for minor waves.

Common mistakes

  • Standing up too quickly

    Common mistake

You rise in one movement — the board tips and you lose balance.

    Better

Step by step: kneel → one foot → stand. Weight stays centred.

  • Looking at your feet

    Common mistake

You look down while standing up — the board tips more easily.

    Better

Look forward at the horizon, hands wide for support.

Safety

Only stand up in shallow, calm water. Wear a life jacket and use the paddle for support. If unsure, stay kneeling or head to shore.

Practical tips for the water

  • Calm practice zone

Practise close to shore in shallow water. Mornings and low-wind conditions are often calmest — ideal for your first stand.

Frequently asked questions

What if I fall in?
Normal when learning. The board usually stays close — grab the board, not the paddle first.
When should I stand?
When you feel secure kneeling and the water is calm enough. In wind, stay kneeling longer.
